You must have heard of Android, iOS operating systems for smartphones. On 19 Jan, Indian Government released ‘BharOS‘ – an open source and free to use operating system. BharOS is developed by J & K Ops pvt ltd, a startup incubated by IIT Madras, India.
The BharOS is a government-funded initiative in India that aims to create a free and open-source operating system (OS) for use in public and governmental systems. By promoting the use of Made in India initiative, the project hopes to lessen smartphones’ reliance on other foreign operating systems . To establish a native ecosystem and an independent future is a giant step forward.

An indigenously-built #Atmanirbhar Mobile Operating System, “BharOS” has been released today. The Operating System has been developed by @iitmadras incubated firm J and K Ops Pvt. Ltd.

“BharOS Service is a Mobile Operating System built on trust, with a focus on giving users more freedom, control, and flexibility to choose and use only the apps that meet their needs. “This innovative system has the potential to change the way users think about security and privacy on their mobile devices,” said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras.
- BharOS is an open source and free to use operating system.
- BharOS is currently provided to organizations and other government sectors.
- BharOS includes No Default Apps (NDA), which means that users are not forced to use apps that they are unfamiliar.
- DuckDuckGo and Signals are the default browser and default messaging app.
According to a Statement : BharOS offers access to reliable applications from company-specific Private App Store Services, BharOS(PASS). A PASS gives users access to a carefully curated list of apps that have passed strict security and privacy requirements set by various organisations. Users can be assured that the apps they are installing are secure to use and have been reviewed for any potential security loopholes or privacy issues.
How is BharOS different from other OS?
On technical basis, BharOS is not much different from Android or iOS, operating systems. BharOS is indigenously operating system specially made in India for the India people.
