Who is Deepinder Goyal?

Deepinder Goyal co-founded Zomato in 2008 and built it into India’s first food-tech unicorn, taking the company public in 2021. In January 2026, after nearly two decades at the helm, he stepped down as CEO, while remaining associated with Eternal (Zomato’s listed parent company) in a board capacity to focus on a cluster of new, higher-risk ventures he’s since described as the next phase of his career. He also served as a judge on Shark Tank India Season 3.

Education and Early Career

Goyal studied at IIT Delhi from 2000 to 2005, earning an Integrated Master of Technology in Mathematics and Computing. After graduating, he joined Bain & Company as a consultant, where he worked until 2008. It was there, while noticing colleagues repeatedly digging through a shared folder of scanned restaurant menus, that he first built what would become Zomato’s founding idea.

Personal Life

Goyal met his first wife, Kanchan Joshi at IIT Delhi, where she was pursuing her MSc in the same Mathematics and Computing department. The two married in 2007 and had a daughter, Sitara in 2013. He’s said in past interviews that he pursued her for six months before she agreed to date him. The couple later separated. Kanchan now works as a Mathematics professor at Delhi University.

In February 2024, Goyal married Grecia Muñoz, a Mexican model and entrepreneur who now goes by Gia Goyal, in a private wedding news of which only became public the following month, after the couple returned from their honeymoon in France. They made their first joint public appearance at the NDTV Indian of the Year awards. In a later television appearance together, the couple revealed a small, telling detail: several of Zomato’s quirky, widely-shared app notifications had originally started as private messages Goyal sent to her.

The Founding of Zomato

  • Zomato started in 2008 as FoodieBay, a restaurant discovery platform.
  • Deepinder and his co-founder Pankaj Chaddah got the idea while working at Bain & Company.
  • They saw that people often struggled to find restaurant menus, which led to the creation of the platform.
  • In 2010, FoodieBay was rebranded as Zomato to expand beyond food discovery.
  • Pankaj Chaddah exited the company in 2018.

Growth and Expansion of Zomato

  • Zomato grew rapidly in India and expanded to over 20 countries at its peak.
  • The company acquired Uber Eats India business in 2020 and grocery delivery platform Blinkit (then Grofers) for $568 million in 2022.
  • In November 2024, Zomato launched District, a “going-out” app for movie tickets, live events, and dining reservations, built by consolidating its existing Zomato Live events business with a ₹2,048.4 crore ($244 million) acquisition of Paytm’s entertainment and ticketing business a direct move into BookMyShow’s territory.
  • On 6 February 2025, the corporate parent officially renamed itself from Zomato Limited to Eternal Limited, with Zomato, Blinkit, Hyperpure, and District operating as its four consumer-facing business verticals.

Life After Zomato: Temple, LAT Aerospace, and Continue Research

Goyal’s post-Zomato period has moved fast, even by his own standards.

Temple, his health-tech venture, makes a bean-shaped wearable worn on the forehead chosen specifically for that placement, which Goyal says allows it to measure the body’s metabolic state and monitor cerebral blood flow in real time. The company raised $54 million in February 2026 at a $190 million valuation, backed by investors including Peak XV Partners, Steadview Capital, and Info Edge Ventures. By July 2026, secondary share sales and an employee liquidity program had pushed Temple’s valuation to roughly $375 million. In August 2026, Goyal revealed a significantly redesigned version of the device : “less than half the size” of the original, in his own words, while claiming a tenfold increase in power. A consumer launch is expected before the end of 2026, at a premium price point reportedly between ₹75,000 and ₹80,000.

LAT Aerospace, Goyal’s aviation venture is focused on building STOL (short takeoff and landing) aircraft. In 2026, the company expanded into the defense sector through its acquisition of Sharang Shakti, an early-stage robotics startup.

Continue Research, announced in October 2025, is a longevity and lifespan-extension research venture that Goyal funded with $25 million of his own capital. A notable personal bet on an area of research that’s historically attracted a small circle of tech billionaires globally.
