Let’s Know about Viraj Bahl

Viraj Bahl was born in Delhi on 28 September 1982. He studied Industrial Engineering at Singapore Polytechnic and began his career not in food or FMCG but at sea working as a 2nd Engineer aboard ships for Maersk, the global shipping company. That early stint in a highly technical, operationally rigorous industry is an unusual starting point for someone who’d go on to build one of India’s biggest condiment brands, and it’s rarely mentioned in most coverage of his career.

Growing Up Around Fun Foods

Viraj’s connection to the food industry started in childhood. His father, Rajiv Bahl, founded Fun Foods, a well-known Indian food brand, and Viraj grew up visiting his father’s factory and the Fun Foods stall at Aahar Delhi, one of India’s largest food and beverage trade fairs. That early exposure gave him a genuine passion for the food business but joining the family company wasn’t handed to him. According to multiple accounts of his early career, his father insisted he prove himself before being allowed into the business, which he eventually did.

That chapter didn’t end the way he’d hoped. In 2008, Rajiv Bahl decided to sell Fun Foods to the German company Dr. Oetker for ₹110 crore (around $14 million) a decision Viraj was reportedly against, but had no real say in. It was by most accounts, a difficult and emotional turning point rather than a clean, triumphant exit.

Pocket Full: The Failure Before Veeba

Rather than walk away from entrepreneurship after the Fun Foods sale, Viraj used the proceeds to start his own venture: a restaurant business called Pocket Full, launched in 2009. It didn’t work. The venture ran into sustained financial difficulty and shut down by 2013, leaving him in a genuinely strained financial position not the story most founder profiles like to tell, but a real and formative one for what came next.

Personal Life and Philosophy

Viraj Bahl is married to Ridhima Bahl and the couple have two sons Rajvir and Ranvir. Despite Veeba’s scale, Viraj has been notably vocal about work-life balance, publicly speaking out against excessive working hours for employees. A stance that stands out in India’s broader startup culture, where founders frequently valorize overwork. His own view, in short: building a profitable business matters less than building one that genuinely creates value in people’s lives.

How Veeba Was Born: From B2B to Brand?

In January 2013, Viraj founded Veeba (VRB Consumer Products) in Neemrana, Rajasthan reportedly selling his own house to help fund the business after the Pocket Full failure had already stretched his finances thin. The bet was on a genuine gap in the Indian market: quality, clean-label sauces and condiments, initially built by supplying QSR chains before expanding into retail.

It’s a pattern similar to how Mohit Yadav rebuilt after Freewill’s shutdown to found Minimalist both founders turned a specific, painful failure into the operating discipline that shaped their next successful company.

Veeba has since grown into a company with 500+ employees and revenue that has crossed ₹1,000 crore, supplying sauces and condiments to major QSR chains the tangy sauces used at KFC and the accompaniments served at Domino’s in India both trace back to Veeba’s kitchens, even though most consumers have never heard the brand name directly.

Beyond Veeba: Wok Tok, Zyro, and a Growing House of Brands

VRB Consumer Products has expanded well beyond its original sauce business. The company now also operates:

  • Wok Tok projected to contribute 8–9% of VRB’s overall revenue by FY27
  • Zyro a beverage brand with a 2026 expansion into zero-sugar mixers
  • Tasty Pixel and Barisco newer additions to the portfolio
  • Nom Nom Express a Pan-Asian quick-service restaurant concept, reflecting what Viraj has described as a shift in Indian consumer demand toward “sophisticated fast” food rather than just quick food.

Veeba has built a loyal customer base both among chefs and everyday consumers.

Viraj Bahl on Shark Tank India

Viraj Bahl joined the panel of Shark Tank India Season 4 in late 2024, describing it as an opportunity to help entrepreneurs building genuinely scalable businesses that solve real consumer needs. He continued as a panelist into Season 5, which aired from January to March 2026, appearing alongside fellow Sharks including Peyush Bansal, Aman Gupta, Anupam Mittal, Namita Thapar, Vineeta Singh, Ritesh Agarwal, and Kunal Bahl.
