Varun Alagh is the co-founder and CEO of Honasa Consumer Ltd., the parent company of Mamaearth and other personal care brands. From working with multinational FMCG giants to building India’s first direct-to-consumer unicorn in the beauty sector. His journey reflects expertise in brand building and entrepreneurship.

    Who is Varun Alagh?

Varun Alagh co-founded Honasa Consumer Private Limited in November 2016 with his wife Ghazal Alagh. The company launched Mamaearth as its first brand, which became Asia’s first MadeSafe-certified toxin-free personal care brand.

Under his leadership, Honasa expanded from Mamaearth into a house of brands. This includes The Derma Co., Aqualogica, BBlunt, Dr. Sheth’s, Staze Beauty, and Luminéve. In January 2022, Honasa became India’s first unicorn of the year, raising $52 million led by Sequoia at a valuation of $1.2 billion.

    Varun Alagh Age

He was born on August 26, 1984, making him 41 years old as of 2025. He was born and raised in Gurgaon (now Gurugram), Haryana, India.

    Varun Alagh Education

Varun holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering (now Delhi Technological University), which he completed between 2001 and 2005.

He then earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) with dual specialization in Finance and Marketing from XLRI Jamshedpur between 2005 and 2007.

    The Birth of Mamaearth

Varun and Ghazal’s son Agastya suffered from eczema at birth. His skin was allergic to products containing chemicals, turning red and itchy when exposed to them. Doctors recommended toxin-free baby care products, but the couple found it difficult to find natural skincare products in India as most baby care products contained toxins.

The couple often asked relatives and friends traveling abroad to bring toxin-free products for their son. This frustrating experience led them to create their own solution.

    Founding Honasa Consumer

In November 2016, Varun resigned from Coca-Cola and founded Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd. with his wife Ghazal Alagh, launching Mamaearth as their first brand. The company was established to provide safe, toxin-free alternatives for Indian parents.

    Varun Alagh Net Worth

The net worth of Varun Alagh’s is ₹5,900 crore (~$710 million) as of 2025. However, estimates vary across sources, with some reports placing his net worth higher based on his shareholding in Honasa Consumer.

Varun Alagh as a Shark in Shark Tank India

Varun Alagh is set to become one of the sharks for Shark Tank India Season 5, bringing the perspective of a founder-CEO who took his brand from scratch to IPO. This follows his wife Ghazal Alagh’s appearance as a shark in Season 1 of the show.
