Question
The Online Transition Dilemma: How Should Businesses Evaluate Risk Before Going Digital?
Traditional businesses face a tough call when deciding to transition online. Beyond the obvious benefits, hidden costs like customer acquisition, digital logistics, and margin pressure pose real risks.
What criteria, risk signals, or initial tests should business owners use to determine if digital expansion is right for them before committing capital?

I think going digital is a good move for most businesses but it shouldn't be done just because everyone else is doing it. The first step is to understand whether customers actually want to buy online and whether the business can manage the extra costs.
I would start small with a simple website or WhatsApp business and test the response. The biggest mistake is focusing only on sales without calculating marketing costs, delivery charges and returns. More sales don't always mean more profit.
Once the business starts seeing consistent demand and healthy margins, it makes sense to invest more. In my opinion, the smarter approach is to test the market first and scale based on real results rather than taking a big risk upfront.

WhatsApp can be a great first step for traditional businesses because it lets them test online demand without investing heavily in a website or app.
